21. yüzyıl, insanların yaşamlarında daha derin anlamların arayışında oldukları bir çağdır. Giblin (1996), bu yüzyılı “anlama, değerlere ve aşkınlığa dair toplumsal açlık çağı” olarak nitelendirmektedir. Psikologlar ve araştırmacılar açısından bu toplumsal eğilimi incelemenin, dindarlığa ilişkin dinamikleri bireysel terapi, aile ve evlilik danışmanlığı çalışmalarında yararlanılabilecek bir kaynak olarak ele almanın etik bir zorunluluk olduğu yadsınamaz bir gerçektir. Elinizdeki kitap din ve dindarlık olgularına ilişkin dinamiklerin aile işleyişine olan etkilerine “ödüller ve bedeller” bağlamında odaklanan, nitel yöntemle yapılandırılmış bilimsel bir araştırmayı içermektedir. Sosyoloji, psikoloji, antropoloji, felsefe ve dilbilim gibi sağlam kuramsal kaynaklara sahip olan nitel araştırma yöntemlerinin ortak amacı insan davranışını içinde bulunduğu bağlam dahilinde ve çok yönlü olarak anlamaya çalışmaktır. Bu araştırma, karmaşık ve çok boyutlu bir yapıya sahip olan din olgusunun aile yasamı üzerindeki yansımalarının kapsamlı olarak incelenmesi bakımından, insan merkezli disiplinlerde çalışan araştırmacılar ve ruh sağlığı profesyonelleri için farklı bakış açıları sunacaktır
